Black was the first Evangel quarterback to throw for more than 6,000 yards in a career and held the record until 2023 Hall of Famer Brett Mitchell broke the record in 2003. He also ranks second in career passing touchdowns with 63, and total offensive yards and total touchdowns responsible for with 74.  

A native of Jacksonville, Florida, Black threw for more than 2,400 yards in 1996 and 1997 earning All-American honors both seasons. In 1997, he was named the Heart of America Athletic Conference Offensive Player of the Year and was a three-time All-Conference selection.  

He currently ranks in the top three career passing categories for touchdowns, completions, and total yards.  

In 1996, he helped lead Evangel to an 11-1 record including an undefeated regular season winning the Heart Conference Championship. EU advanced to the NAIA Playoff Semifinals, falling to eventual national champion Sioux Falls, 28-22. Evangel also won the 1997 Heart Championship finishing 9-2 overall and 8-1 in the conference.
