Brett Mitchell, an All-American at quarterback, still leads Evangel in most passing yards (8,001), passing touchdowns (61), and pass completions/attempts (506-993) in a career. In the 2002 season, Mitchell was named the Heart of America Conference Offensive Player of the Year, earning his All-American nod, while setting 13 new Evangel football records in a single season.

Under Charles Linn for his first two seasons, Mitchell helped lead Evangel to the NAIA Playoffs in 2001, where they fell in the quarterfinals to Benedictine. The following season, Mitchell threw 27 passing touchdowns, currently the second-most in EU history in a single season, while throwing for 3,153 passing yards, the most in a season at Evangel. In Mitchell's junior season, under head coach Scott Metcalf, Mitchell helped guide EU to the CMH Bowl against Cumberland. During his four seasons, Evangel posted a 30-12 record.
