Charles Linn took the reins of Evangel Football in 1999 from Hall of Fame head coach Keith Barefield, continuing the team's success into the early 2000s. Although Linn was only a head coach for only three seasons, he brought Evangel a bowl win and a bid to the NAIA playoffs in his final season. His tenure at Evangel last more than 15 seasons as an assistant coach.

In Linn's first season, Evangel finished with an 8-2 record, taking a 34-9 win in the KWTO Bowl to end the season over North Greenville. Linn brought Evangel back to the NAIA Playoffs for the first time in four seasons in 2001, earning the Heart of America Conference Coach of the Year award. Linn ended his career as a head coach at Evangel with a 24-7 record, finishing with a winning percentage of .774, the highest in EU football history.
