Atchison, Kan. – Evangel softball got back to their winning ways on Saturday sweeping a doubleheader from conference rival Benedictine. The Crusaders won game one 3-0 and game two 4-0.
With the wins, Evangel improves to 26-10 on the season and 12-4 in the Heart of America conference. The victories also puts the Crusaders in sole possession of third place and one game behind first place Grand View. Benedictine falls to 21-19 and 9-9 in the conference.
Evangel's Michaela Tolliver threw a gem to give Evangel the win in game one. The junior from Lee's Summit, Missouri allowed only one hit over seven innings of work while striking out three. Evangel would score one run in the third inning on a Kasie Zukow double followed by two unearned runs in the fourth inning. Brittany Arnold went 2 for 3 at the plate with a run scored for Evangel.
Pitching was key again for the Crusaders in game two as Kyra Parker threw a shutout to lead Evangel to the win. Parker threw seven innings allowing five hits and striking out two. It marked the ninth time this season the junior from Webb City has started or completed a shutout.
Kiara Carrier put Evangel on the board with a two-out, two-RBI triple in the top of the fourth. The Crusaders added two insurance runs in the seventh inning. Cassidy Gillihan went 2 for 4 with an RBI for the Crusaders.
Evangel return home on Tuesday, April 19th when they host MidAmerica Nazarene in a crucial conference doubleheader. First pitch is scheduled for 1:00pm.
