ATCHISON, Kan. – Valor Softball took on the Benedictine Ravens on Thursday (Apr. 27) afternoon in their final regular season road match of the year.

After sweeping Clarke in their previous doubleheader, Evangel looked to take a pair of road games over a tough Benedictine squad. In game one, the Valor ran into dominant Raven pitching, falling to Benedictine, 2-0, after recording just two hits in the first match. The Valor rebounded in game two, scoring four runs and only allowing a single run from Micaiah Cordell's complete game effort, taking a 4-1 victory and split with the Ravens.

NOTABLE

  • Both Evangel and Benedictine finished with eight hits combined on Thursday.

  • Micaiah Cordell earned her 13th win of the season in game two, tied for 13th all time in Evangel history for pitching wins in a season.

  • Ali Raley recorded an RBI in game two, the 132nd of her career, currently third all-time in Evangel history, seven behind the all-time leader, Aimee Mann.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • In game one, Benedictine scored a run to open the game, taking an early 1-0 lead at the end of the first inning.

  • The Ravens scored their second run of the ballgame in the fourth inning, taking a 2-0 lead.

  • Evangel recorded their first hit of the game in the top of the sixth inning, breaking up Benedictine's no-hit bid on a Ali Raley single through the left side. The Valor were unable to score on the two out hit, moving to the final inning of the match.

  • The Valor made some noise in the final inning, leading off with a Mariah Hanner single to left field and a Karlie Romines walk. Evangel was unable to advance both runners, falling short in game one, 2-0.

  • Neither team could score in the first two innings of game two, but Evangel was able to put a pair of runs on the board in the top of the third inning. Cayleigh Berry used a lead-off bunt single, advancing to second on a Megan Stone walk. Brooke Arnold broke the game open with a double down the right field line, scoring both Berry and Stone and giving the Valor a 2-0 lead.

  • Benedictine earned a run back in the bottom of the third inning, making it a 2-1 game.

  • Evangel scored another pair of runs in the top of the fifth inning. A Stone single to center field with two outs was followed by an Arnold double to left field that scored Stone and a Raley double to left center field that scored Arnold, putting Evangel ahead, 4-1.
