SPRINGFIELD, Mo. – Valor Softball began a four game home stand on Friday, taking on the Mount Mercy Mustangs in a doubleheader, looking to take a win against the Mustangs who were receiving votes in the last top 25 poll.
The Valor ran into strong pitching and made a few miscues on Friday as they fell in both matches, 8-2 and 4-2.

Evangel mustered 10 hits combined in games one and two, compared to Mount Mercy's 18.

HOW IT HAPPENED

Mount Mercy scored five runs in the third and fourth innings to take an 5-0 lead.

Evangel got on the board in the bottom of the fourth. Megan Stone was hit by a pitch, scoring on a Mariah Hanner double to left field, making it a 5-1 MMU lead.

The Mustangs scored another two runs in the top of the fifth to take a 7-1 lead and in the bottom of the fifth, Evangel scored an additional run. Annslee Leeviraphan singled through the right side, advancing to second on a ground out, and scoring on a pair of MMU errors, making it 7-2.

Mount Mercy hit a home run in the top of the sixth to solidify their 8-2 victory over the Valor in game one.

The Mustangs scored the first run of game two in the top of the second.

Neither team scored for the next few innings until the bottom of the fifth when Evangel tied up the game. Cayleigh Berry singled up the middle and scored on a Brooke Arnold double to left center field.

In the final inning of the game, Mount Mercy broke through, scoring three runs to take a 4-1 lead and putting Evangel down to their final three outs.

In the bottom of the seventh, Cayleigh Berry walked and Kya Schmidt entered to run. Schmidt stole second and advanced to third on a dropped third strike. Arnold walked and Schmidt scored on a groundout, making it a 4-2 game with two outs. Ali Raley worked a walk, but a strike out to end the game ended Evangel's chances at the comeback, falling 4-2.
