SPRINGFIELD, Mo. – Valor Baseball concluded their four game home series on Monday (Mar. 20) afternoon, looking to take or split the series with the Vikings of Missouri Valley.

Evangel used strong pitching to shut out the Vikings in game three, 8-0, but fell in a close matchup in game four, 3-2, in extra innings, leading to the split with Missouri Valley.

HIGHLIGHTS

  • The trio of Wyatt Keplar, Levi Loughridge, and Dylan Gallup shutout the Vikings on Monday in game three, allowing just three hits total in the match.

  • Evangel finished with a .280 batting average combined on Monday, compared to Missouri Valley's .178.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • The Valor scored the first run of the afternoon on a Carson Sturdefant single after Jeremy Vickers had singled and advanced on a balk prior to the at bat.

  • Evangel found another run in the second inning when Brooks Espy got on base from a walk. Riley Mitchell courtesy ran and advanced to second on a groundout, going to third on a wild pitch, and ultimately scoring on a MVC balk, giving EU a 2-0 lead.

  • Sturdefant singled and scored after Eli Cook blasted a home run past the center field wall in the fourth inning. Bro. Espy also added a run after two MVC errors in the field, putting the Valor ahead, 5-0.

  • Athanie Leeviraphan tripled to open the bottom of the fifth and scored on another Vikings balk, making it a 6-0 game in favor of EU.

  • Evangel scored two runs in the bottom of the sixth. Rodell Andrews III singled to open the inning and then a Matthew Olson bunt single advanced Andrews III to second. Brennan Espy singled up the middle to score Andrews III and a Athanie Leeviraphan single scored Olson, solidifying Evangel's 8-0 shutout victory as Gallup closed the door on the Vikings.

  • The Valor opened game four on a Bre. Espy home run to left field on the first pitch, taking an early 1-0 lead.

  • Neither team scored until Eli Cook doubled to left center field and scored on a Holton Simmons double to left field, extending Evangel's lead to 2-0.

  • Missouri Valley scored their first runs of the afternoon in the top of the sixth with a home run to tie the game at 2-2.

  • The Valor were able to get a runner on second and third with two outs in the bottom of the seventh inning, but failed to score the walk off run.

  • MVC took the lead in the top of the eighth, taking a 3-2 overall lead and bringing Evangel to their last three outs.

  • Leeviraphan singled with two outs in the bottom of the eighth, but Evangel's final at bat came just short of going over the fence, as EU fell, 3-2, in eight innings and split with the Vikings.

NOTABLE

  • Evangel pitching struck out 19 Vikings batters combined on Monday in a solid day on the mound in games three and four.
