Early Scoring from Mount Mercy Proves Detrimental as Valor Baseball Falls on Sunday

FORSYTH, Mo. – Valor Baseball hosted the Mount Mercy Mustangs on Sunday (Mar. 12), looking to take or split the series with the Mustangs.

Evangel fell in both matches, falling behind early and unable to fuel comebacks in both games, 5-3 and 9-4, falling to 1-3 in conference play.

HIGHLIGHTS

  • Athanie Leeviraphan went 4-7 from the plate on Sunday, finishing with three RBIs and a home run.

  • Evangel left 12 runners on base combined on Sunday.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Mount Mercy opened game one with a grand slam in the top of the first inning, taking an early 4-0 lead.

  • Evangel scored their first run in the bottom of the third inning on a Jeremy Vickers home run to left field, making it a 4-1 game, in favor of the Mustangs.

  • Holton Simmons walked to open the bottom of the fourth and a Leeviraphan home run to right field made it a 4-3 game, with Evangel trailing by just one run.

  • Mount Mercy opened the top of the fifth inning with a leadoff home run, extending their lead to 5-3, and taking the win with the same score.

  • Mount Mercy scored seven runs in the first two innings of game two, with Evangel scoring four runs in the bottom of the second. Levi Loughridge walked, followed by a Brennan Espy double. An Arly Miller fielders choice scored Loughridge, followed by a pair of singles from Holton Simmons and Matthew Olson to load the bases. A Brooks Espy single up the middle scored both two runners, while a Leeviraphan single scored another run, making it 7-4, in favor of Mount Mercy.

  • The Mustangs hit a two run home run to extend their lead to 9-4 and Evangel was unable to score in the next few innings, ultimately falling, 9-4, and losing the series, 3-1.

NOTABLE

  • Evangel matched Mount Mercy with 13 hits throughout both games.
