WALNUT RIDGE, Ark. – Valor Softball traveled to Arkansas on Saturday, taking on the Williams Baptist Eagles for a doubleheader matchup, looking to continue their strong start to the season.

Mariah Hanner helped carry the offensive load on Saturday, hitting three home runs and willing the Valor to a pair of victories, 7-4 and 2-1.

HIGHLIGHTS

  • Hanner went 5-7 at the plate, finishing with four runs and six RBIs, on three home runs.

  • Samantha Romano earned the win in game one.

  • Ashland Diggs continued her excellent start to the season, earning the win in game two, but pitching solid in relief in both games.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • The first two innings of game one went scoreless for both sides. In the top of the third, an Ali Raley single was followed by a Mariah Hanner blast to right field, giving the Valor a 2-0 lead.

  • The Eagles had a huge fifth inning, scoring four runs and taking a 4-2 lead into the final two innings.

  • A Raley walk in the sixth inning proved vital for the Valor, as Hanner was able to double and score Kya Schmidt, who was pinch running for the catcher. Soon after, Megan Stone walked, and an error on the Eagles catcher scored both Stone and Hanner, giving the Valor a 5-4 lead.

  • Hanner added a pair of insurance runs in the top of the seventh, after a Raley walk, hitting her second home run of the game and solidifying Evangel's 7-4 victory.

  • In game two, neither team scored until the fourth inning. Again it would be Hanner who provided the offense. A solo home run to center field put the Valor ahead 1-0.

  • Williams Baptist responded in the fifth inning, tying the game up, but a Valor run in the sixth inning gave the Valor the lead again. A Raley single to shortstop was followed by a Hanner single, advancing Schmidt, who was running for Raley, to third. Schmidt scored immediately after on a suicide squeeze by Stone, giving the Valor the 2-1 lead that they kept to the finish.

NOTABLE

  • Evangel allowed just two hits in game two.

  • The Valor finished with 16 hits combined on Saturday.
