WALNUT RIDGE, Ark. – Valor Baseball hit the road to take on the Williams Baptist Eagles on Friday (Feb. 24) afternoon in a pair of seven inning matches. Both offenses struggled at different points throughout the day, as Evangel fell in game one, 1-0, but rebounded in game two, 5-1.

HIGHLIGHTS

  • Evangel had solid pitching throughout the day, allowing just two runs, only one of which was earned.

  • Nathan Lamb led the Valor offensively, going 3-6 with 2 runs scored on Friday.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Evangel and Williams Baptist played a scoreless first five innings of game one until a Valor miscue helped get an Eagles runner on base and eventually score on a sacrifice fly.

  • The lone Eagle run in the sixth inning proved to be the difference as Evangel's offense could not score a game-tying run, falling 1-0, after going 3-24 from the plate.

  • Lamb opened game two with a single to left field and advanced to third on a Athanie Leeviraphan single. Lamb scored soon after on a wild pitch, giving Evangel a 1-0 lead.

  • Neither team scored over the second or third innings, but in the top of the fourth Evangel tacked on two runs to take a 3-0 lead. Eli Cook singled and then advanced to second on an error. Cook then advanced to third on a groundout and scored on a Carson Sturdefant single to right field. A Brennan Espy fielders choice scored Jeremy Vickers on the next at bat.

  • In the top of the sixth, Evangel again added another run from Cook. Eli singled to open the inning and then advanced to second on a Levi Loughridge sacrifice bunt. A Sturdefant walk loaded the bases for the Valor, and Cook would score on a error on the second baseman, taking a 4-0 lead.

  • Williams Baptist scored a run in the bottom of the sixth, but Evangel was able to earn the run back in the following inning. Lamb was able to score when he doubled and then advanced to third on an error, scoring on a Cook sacrifice fly, taking the 5-1 lead they maintained to the finish.

NOTABLE

  • Cook had a big game two, going 2-3 from the plate and scoring two runs and an RBI.

  • Isaac Daley struck out 11 of the 17 batters he faced in game one.
