SPRINGFIELD, Mo. – After a quick reschedule and location change of Friday's games, Evangel Softball hosted the Central Baptist College Mustangs, instead of traveling to Conway, Ark., on Friday, due to the threat of inclement weather.
Valor Softball struggled at the plate and in the field in game one, leading to a 7-1 loss, but were able to successfully rebound offensively in game two, using the long ball to take a 11-5 win.
HIGHLIGHTS
-
Micaiah Cordell earned the win in game two, allowing just two earned runs and successfully using her fielders to get outs.
-
Ashland Diggs had a solid two games in relief for Evangel, allowing just two hits and a walk in four innings pitched.
-
Cayleigh Berry had a huge game in game two, hitting two home runs and making the final out on a heads up play in left field.
HOW IT HAPPENED
-
In game one, CBC was able to take an early lead on a three run home run, pushing out to a 3-0 score.
-
Evangel responded in the second inning, using a Megan Stone home run to center field to cut into the Mustang lead, 3-1.
-
After the home run, Evangel was only able to muster three more hits on offense, as the Mustangs starter was able to record out after out. CBC tacked on four additional runs in the latter innings, as the Valor fell, 7-1 in game one.
-
The Valor came alive on offense in game two. After a scoreless first inning, CBC was able to plate two runners on a single and sacrifice fly. Evangel matched the Mustang scoring in the bottom of the inning. Kenna Mayfield reached base on a fielder's choice and scored on a Cayleigh Berry home run to deep center field, tying the game up at 2-2.
-
In the top of the third, CBC again used their offense to score two runners, both on a pair of Evangel miscues, taking a 4-2 lead.
-
In the bottom of the third, a Brooke Arnold single was followed by a Josie Allcock-Sperry single to put two runners on. Ali Raley followed by powering a ball past the left field wall for a three run home run. Stone followed the Raley homer up by walking, stealing second, advancing to third on a CBC error and scoring on another CBC error, to take a 6-4 lead.
-
Central Baptist scored another run in the top of the fourth, but Evangel quickly answered to lead off in the bottom of the inning, when Cayleigh Berry hit her second home run of the day, leading off the inning.
-
Arnold double to right center field following the homer and scored on a Raley single to center field. Mariah Hanner walked and eventually scored with Naomi Perkins, who was courtesy running for Raley, on a Stone single and CBC error, taking a 10-5 lead.
-
A Kya Schmidt single kicked off the bottom of the fifth inning. Allcock-Sperry singled, scoring Schmidt, and solidifying Evangel's 11-5 victory over the CBC Mustangs.
