HOW IT HAPPENED
-
Evangel kicked off the scoring early in game one against Viterbo. Brooks Espy singled to center field and Jeremy Vickers entered to courtesy run. Vickers advanced to second on a Nathan Lamb sacrifice bunt and then scored on a Eli Cook double to center field, giving the Valor a 1-0 lead.
-
In the second inning, a Levi Loughridge lead off single was followed by Rodell Andrews III being hit by a pitch and a Holton Simmons walk, loading the bases. Brooks Espy used a sacrifice fly to score Loughridge, putting Evangel ahead, 2-0.
-
Athanie Leeviraphan kicked off the third inning with a double to right field, and eventually scored on a error by Viterbo's shortstop, giving Evangel a 3-0 lead.
-
The Valor exploded for three runs in the fifth inning, kicked off by a Leeviraphan single. Athanie stole second and advanced on a groundout, ultimately scoring on an error by Viterbo's third baseman. Brennan Espy then scored on a double from Loughridge and a double from Carson Sturdefant scored Loughridge, giving the Valor a 6-0 lead.
-
Viterbo was able to score three runs in the seventh inning, but Loughridge came in to close the door on the V-Hawks comeback, earning the save in the 6-3 win.
-
In game two, both offenses struggled due to exceptional starting pitching. Evangel scored the first run of the evening in the top of the sixth. A Parker Dinwiddie single put a runner on and Dinwiddie advanced all the way to third on an error by the Owls catcher. On the following play, Leeviraphan got caught in a premeditated rundown, allowing Dinwiddie to score before he was tagged out, giving the Valor a 1-0 lead.
-
Dill was able to pitch out of trouble in the bottom of the seventh, loading the bases with no outs. Dill forced a double play as William Woods scored a run and then struck out the final batter of the inning.
-
In extras, Matthew Olson was placed on second for the international extra innings rule. Olson proceeded to score, giving the Valor a 2-1 lead on a Sturdefant double to center field.
