SPRINGFIELD, Mo. – After a long week of games, Evangel Softball hosted the number nine team in the nation on Monday afternoon, looking to take a couple of wins. Central Methodist brought their best pitching into the games and stalled the Valor offense, 5-0, in game one, and 8-0, in game two.
HIGHLIGHTS
-
The Valor fought hard in game one, only allowing five hits to the Eagle offense, but could only record two hits of their own, falling 5-0.
-
In game two, Evangel hurt themselves, again recording just two hits, but committing six errors in the field, allowing CMU to take an early lead that they did not relinquish, 8-0, in five innings.
HOW IT HAPPENED
-
Central Methodist recorded three runs in the first inning of game one, using a double and single to push across the runners. In the following inning, CMU used a sacrifice fly to add their fourth run of the game.
-
Evangel generated both of their hits in the first two innings of the game, failing to push across nearly any offense as CMU proved their national ranking.
-
In the bottom of the fourth, Evangel had an opportunity to score a couple of runs, but with the bases loaded, they fell short, leaving the runners stranded.
-
CMU closed out game one striking out the Valor side of the lineup, giving the Eagles the 5-0 victory.
-
In game two, the Valor again only recorded two hits, while CMU generated nine hits of their own.
-
In the first inning, CMU scored three runs on three Valor miscues to grab an early lead.
-
Although Evangel fought hard and Karlie Romines used a double in the first inning, offense came as a luxury against CMU's undefeated (13-0) starting pitcher, as Romines was left stranded at second.
-
Evangel could only tack on one more hit in the game, an Abigail Posten single, as CMU continued to score runs on offense and capitalize on the Valor errors.
-
Ultimately, CMU took the ball game in five innings, sweeping the Valor, 8-0.
NOTABLE
-
Romines recorded a double in the second game, the lone Valor extra base hit of the afternoon.
-
Abby Jo Emmitt pitched two innings of relief in game one, allowing just one hit to the Eagles and striking out three batters.
-
Evangel lost their first series since April 9th, going on a 9 game winning streak during the span.
