ATCHISON, Kan. – Benedictine relied on an offense that scored in 10 of 14 innings to register a Heart of America Athletic Conference doubleheader sweep of Evangel Friday afternoon at Olsen Stadium.
The Ravens built a double-digit lead in the opening game behind a 4-for-5, five-RBI performance by Daryl Myers, then overcame an early 2-0 EU lead in the nightcap by scoring in each of the first five frames en route to an 8-4 victory.
Patrick Gaul led Evangel with a four-hit game in the second contest, while both Jason Jarrell and Stephen Belcher totaled three hits for the day.
Game 1 – Benedictine 13, Evangel 1
Benedictine scored eight times in the first three frames and benefited from two-homer games by Myers and Michael Slaten to cruise to a runaway victory.
BC scored one in the first, three in the second and four more in the third to put the game on ice. Slaten homered with one out in the home half of the first to open the scoring, before Myers and Danny Favazza delivered RBI-doubles in the second to extend the lead.
Brandon Van Beceleare drove home two runs with his third-inning double, and Myers belted a two-run homer to make it an 8-0 game.
The Ravens tacked on two more runs in the fifth on Slaten's second long ball of the game—a two-run shot to center, then ran their lead to 12 runs with a three-run rally in the sixth after EU scored its lone run in the top of the inning on Gaul's fielder's choice grounder.
Michael Kruse earned the mound victory for Benedictine after allowing one run on eight hits in a complete-game effort.
Game 2 – Benedictine 8, Evangel 4
The Benedictine bats stayed hot in the second game, as the Ravens overcame a two-run Evangel first inning with a three-run rally in the home half, then took the lead for good on a Jacob Pavlyak sac fly in the second.
Favazza and Jack Harpole each drove in three runs for the Ravens, who handed Evangel its seventh-consecutive defeat. Myers turned in a 2-for-4 effort as well, and Slaten scored a pair of runs, stole a base and reached base safely in three of his four trips to the plate.
Gaul sparked a two-run Evangel rally with a leadoff single in the opening inning, scoring on Noah Suiter's sacrifice fly, before Jarrell's drove home a second run with a base hit to left field.
But the Ravens answered immediately, scoring a pair of Harpole's single in the first, then taking the lead for good on Pavlyak's fly ball to right in the bottom of the second. BC added single runs in the third and fourth frames, then broke the game open in the fifth on Favazza's two-run double in the fifth.
Three Benedictine hurlers held Evangel in check, despite allowing 12 hits. Isaac Rudolph gave up three earned runs on eight hits in his 5.0 innings, before Hunter Ostertag and Slaten eached logged a scoreless inning of relief.
In addition to Gaul's four-hit effort, Jarrell, Grant Kosanke and Nathan Lamb contributed two hits apiece to lead EU's 12-hit attack.
