SPRINGFIELD, Mo. – The Evangel baseball team opened conference play Friday with a double-header sweep, 1-0 and 5-3, against Grand View behind a pair of solid pitching performances.
Game One
The Crusaders got the win in game one behind a complete game shutout from Derek Kennell. Kennell tossed seven innings as he scattered four hits, one walk and five strikeouts in the win.
Evangel scored the game's only run when Jordan Yates hit a sacrifice fly to score Dylan Bradshaw. Bradshaw led-off the inning with a single and moved to third on an error.
Tanner McVey and Patrick Gaul earned the other hits for Evangel as the Vikings' Parker Thode allowed just three hits and struck out seven.
Game Two
Bret Hoffman picked up the win in game two as he pitched six innings and limited Grand View to three runs on six hits. Hoffman struck out three before Tanner McVey pitched a perfect seventh to earn his second save of the season.
Both teams scored a pair of runs in the first inning before Grand View took a 3-2 lead in the third inning. The Crusaders would tie the game in the fifth inning on an RBI single from Jordan Yates to score Jose Vargas.
Evangel took the lead in the bottom of the sixth when Dustin Hargus reached on an error to lead-off the inning. A double from Gabe Franklins would score Hargus before Franklin scored two batters later on an RBI double from Mason Baur.
Yates finished 2-for-3 for Evangel as the Crusaders out-hit Grand View, 7-6.
