SPRINGFIELD, Mo. – The Evangel baseball team combined timely hitting and solid pitching to sweep the first two games of a four-game series, 3-1 and 6-3 from Avila in Heart South Division action.
Game One
Evangel got a solid start from Derek Kennell who tossed six innings and scattered eight hits. Kennell managed to get the outs when needed striking out seven and allowing no walks.
Evangel was out-hit by the Eagles, 8-4, however, Avila stranded eight base runners.
Patrick Gaul got the scoring started with his second home run of the season before the Crusaders added a second run on an Avila error in the fourth inning. Ryan Frye pushed the Evangel lead to 3-0, in the fifth inning when he hit a no-doubt solo home run to left.
Tanner McVey pitched a perfect seventh inning for his third save of the season.
Game Two
Evangel scored in each of the first four innings to build a 6-1 lead. The Crusaders nearly batted around in the bottom of the first scoring three runs on five hits.
Dustin Hargus finished 4-for-4 with two RBIs as Evangel out-hit Avila 13-9 in the second game. Gabe Franklin and Gaul also recorded multiple hits with Franklin adding two RBIs.
Bret Hoffman was solid as he settled in for six strong innings allowing just one hit from the third through sixth innings. Hoffman improved to 5-2 on the mound walking just one and striking out four before Colin Irvine started the seventh.
McVey came on to get the final two outs after Avila loaded the bases putting the senior in a save situation. McVey recorded a strikeout as he picked up his fourth save of the season and second of the day.
