Avila Rallies Twice Past Evangel Baseball

KANSAS CITY – A pair of rallies from Avila handed the Evangel baseball, 10-7, and 3-2, setbacks on Friday in Heart of America Athletic Conference action.

 

In game one, both teams produced plenty of offense trading leads into the final innings. The Crusaders out-hit Avila 14-9 but left nine men on base as a grand slam in the bottom of the sixth inning gave the Eagles their final lead of the game.

 

Harold Alvarez finished 3-for-4 with two RBIs while Jordan YatesRyan FryeDustin Hargus and Stevin Cisneros all recorded multiple hits. Hargus and Fry also added an extra base hit with Hargus hitting his second home run of the season.

 

Derek Kennell earned the no-decision after going 3.2 innings and allowing five runs on four hits. The left-hander allowed a season-high five walks.

 

Deric Link was the loser pitching two innings and being charged with two of the runs while John Cates got Evangel out of the bottom of the sixth.

 

In game two Evangel rallied from two runs down to tie the game in the top of the fourth. However, Avila would walk-off in the bottom of the seventh on a one-out base hit.

 

Starter Taylor Wood scattered eight hits and was charged with all three Avila runs. He struck out five in the loss.

 

Austin Alfrey and Tanner McVey both finished 2-for-3 as McVey also doubled and scored in the fourth.

 

UP NEXT
Evangel will look to snap a five-game skid and split the series with Avila on Saturday in a double-header. First pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m.
