OLATHE, Kan. – The Evangel baseball team handed MidAmerica Nazarene is first conference loss with a 4-2 comeback win in game two, after falling 11-1 in game one Friday afternoon.
In game one, a big offensive outburst from the Pioneers in the bottom of the fourth gave the home team all it needed in an 11-1 win. Evangel scored its only run in the top of the second inning on a Ryan Frye RBI.
However, MNU held the Crusaders scoreless over the final five innings and allowed just two hits. Along with the RBI double from Frye, Stevin Cisneros recorded the other Crusader hit.
Starter Derek Kennell went just 3.1 innings pitched as he allowed seven runs with just four earned and eight hits. Josh Lachnit pitched the final 2.2 innings and was able to limit the Pioneer damage.
A final inning rally gave Evangel a comeback win in the second game. Two runs in the top of the first gave Evangel an early led before MidAmerica Nazarene tied the game in the bottom of the fourth.
Evangel rallied in the top of the seventh on a lead-off single from Tanner McVey. Blake McCarty pinch ran for McVey and scored two batters later as he stole third and scored on an error by the Pioneers' catcher who was trying to throw out Jose Vargas stealing second.
The Crusaders would add an insurance run on the next batter on a sacrifice fly from Dustin Hargus that scored Vargas.
Crusader starter, Brad Potts was able to manage the Pioneer hitters earning the complete game victory. Potts allowed just four hits and struck out six on the mound.
