Peru, Neb. – Evangel picked up their first conference victory on the road at Peru State College with a 24-21 OT win on a 37 yard field Goal off the foot of Freshman Cameron Mortazavi.
Peru State jumped up on Evangel 10-0 on a 35 yard field goal by Greg Conry and 3 yard touchdown run by Eric Morrison with 14:22 left in the second quarter.
Evangel answered with two touchdown drives, the first a five play 37 yard drive capped off by a Michael Bowman Touchdown catch from Brett Diers with 10:57 left in the second quarter. Evangel scored again in the second on a four play 79 yard drive ending in a 64 yard Touchdown reception by Otis Brown from Diers with 4:52 left in the half. Peru State got the ball and went 84 yards on 14 plays but were held to a field goal just before the half cutting the Crusader lead to 14-13.
The Crusaders scored the only points in the third quarter with a four yard touchdown pass from Brett Diers to Shawn Hebert, extending the lead to 21-13. Peru State answered late in the fourth quarter with a 17 play 80 yard drive capped off with an Aaron Smith touchdown run and a 2pt. reception by Smith to tie the game at 21-21.
Evangel had a chance to win the game in regulation but Cameron Mortazavi's 47 yard field goal try went wide right. Peru State received the ball first in overtime and the Evangel Defense was up to the task. Peru State had two consecutive plays that went for a loss with Cody Christner and Ell C. Teycer recording the tackles for Evangel. The Bobcats third and thirteen pass was broken up by Christner. Peru State then missed the 45 yard field goal attempt wide left. Evangel ran three plays gaining 5 yards setting up Mortazavi again, this time for the 37 yard field goal and the win.
Evangel improved to 3-1 and 1-1 in the Heart of America conference while Peru State dropped to 1-3 and 0-2 in the league.
The Crusaders are on the road next week with a 1 p.m. game at Benedictine College.
