Crusaders open season in Arizona: The Crusaders open the 2014 season Saturday at Arizona Christian. Evangel returns 34 lettermen and 14 starters from a team that went 4-6 and 4-5 in the Heart of America conference last year.
Arizona Christian is playing in their inaugural game as they launch their football program in the game against Evangel. The Firestorm will play football as an independent NAIA team in 2014 and join the Central States Football League next year.
Night of Firsts: Evangel opens their 38th season of football by playing their first ever game in the state of Arizona. It's also the first team they have played from the state. August 23rd is the earliest season opener in program history for Evangel as they play their first game ever in the month of August. Phoenix, Arizona is also the farthest west Evangel has ever played a game.
For Arizona Christian, everything about Saturday night will be a first. The Firestorm are playing their first ever game as a program. Their head coach, Donnie Yantis, is also making his collegiate head coaching debut.
