LAMONI, Iowa – Valor Baseball opened their final road series of the season on Saturday (Apr. 22) afternoon against the Graceland Yellowjackets.
Looking to take a pair of wins to push back into the playoff picture, Evangel took a strong win in game one, 8-4, before falling to the Yellowjackets in game two, 12-4.

HOW IT HAPPENED

Evangel struck first in game one, scoring a run in the top of the second inning. Carson Sturdefant reached base to open the inning on a Graceland error and advanced to second on a perfectly executed sacrifice bunt by Brooks Espy. A Matthew Olson single to center field scored Sturdefant, giving EU a 1-0 lead.

Graceland took the lead in the bottom of the fourth, scoring three runs to lead 3-1.

Evangel evened the score in the top of the fifth. Jeremy Vickers singled and both Athanie Leeviraphan and Levi Loughridge were hit by a pitch to load the bases. A fielders choice by Eli Cook scored Vickers and an error by Graceland allowed Leeviraphan to score, putting the game at 3-3.

Evangel blew the game open, scoring four runs in the top of the sixth. Bro. Espy hit a triple, scoring on a Graceland error. Vickers singled to score Nathan Lamb, who had gotten on base via error. Another Yellowjacket error on Leeviraphan's at bat allowed Lamb to score, and Leeviraphan rounded out scoring on a Loughridge double, making it a 7-3 game.

Graceland scored two runs in the bottom of the sixth to narrow Evangel's lead, but the Valor added a run of their own in the top of the seventh after Riley Mitchell scored on a Bro. Espy sacrifice fly.

Dylan Gallup earned a save, shutting down Graceland in the bottom of the seventh and giving EU a 8-5 lead.

Evangel began game two taking an early lead in the top of the first. Loughridge walked and Mitchell courtesy ran for the pitcher. Mitchell stole second and scored on a Graceland error to give the Valor a 1-0 lead.

Graceland took a 3-1 lead in the bottom of the inning, scoring three runs.

Rodell Andrews III hit a solo homer in the top of the second to cut into the Yellowjacket lead, 3-2.

The Valor were able to retake the lead in the top of the third, scoring a pair of runs. Loughridge singled and Mitchell again entered to run. Mitchell displayed his speed, stealing second and scoring on a Cook double. Cook then scored on a Graceland error to put Evangel ahead, 4-3.

Evangel was unable to score in the remaining innings as Graceland's offense came alive, en route to the Yellowjackets 12-4 victory.
