JOPLIN, Mo. – Evangel Baseball concluded their road trip in Joplin on Saturday, looking to grab another pair of wins. An early offensive attack in game one from Roosevelt proved detrimental as the Valor fell, 9-2, in their first loss of the season. Looking to bounce back in game two, Evangel was able to generate more offense than their previous game, but fell after re-tying the game up, 8-6, moving to 10-2 on the season.

HIGHLIGHTS

  • Evangel outhit Saint Mary (Kan.) in game two, 11-8.

  • Evangel's bullpen had solid days on the mound, allowing just five hits combined.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Roosevelt scored eight runs in the first four innings of game one.

  • Athanie Leeviraphan doubled in the bottom of the fourth and scored on a Roosevelt error, putting the game at 8-1, in favor of the Lakers.

  • The Lakers responded in the top of the sixth by adding an additional run.

  • Brandon Ulm walked to kick off the bottom of the sixth, and advanced to third on singles from Gabe Falcone and Jeremy Vickers. Ulm was able to score on a Matthew Olson sacrifice fly, giving Evangel the final score of game one, 9-2.

  • Saint Mary began game two similar to Roosevelt, scoring six runs in the first two innings to take an early lead.

  • Evangel plated two runs in the top of the third. Holton Simmons singled and advanced to second on a Brooks Espy single. A Nathan Lamb groundout advanced both runners and a Leeviraphan single cleared the bases, making it a 6-2 game in favor of the Spires.

  • The Valor were able to tie the game up in the top of the fifth inning. A Simmons single and Brooks Espy walk put two runners on base for Leeviraphan who doubled to score both runners. Brennan Espy followed Leeviraphan's at bat with a double of his own, scoring Athanie, and Brennan was then scored on another double to center field, this time by Eli Cook, making the game 6-6.

  • An Evangel error in the bottom of the fifth allowed the inning to stay alive with two runners on and Saint Mary took advantage, scoring both runners to take a 8-6 lead.

  • Evangel made noise in the top of the seventh with a Leeviraphan double, but he would be left stranded at third, ending the game in favor of the Spires, 8-6.

NOTABLE

  • Leeviraphan went 4-6 from the plate today, finishing with three doubles, four RBIs, and a walk.

  • Simmons went a perfect 3-3 in game two, scoring two runs for the Valor.
