Evangel Softball Snaps Skid to Sweep Peru State

PERU, Neb. -- The Evangel softball team snapped a four-game skid on Sunday with a double-header sweep at Peru State. The Crusaders held off the Bobcats for a 6-5 win in game one before solid pitching helped Evangel to a 4-2 game two victory.

Game 1
Evangel jumped out to an early 1-0 lead in the first inning when Michelle Sheppard scored on a passed ball. Sheppard led off the game with the first of two hits in the game. 

Peru State would take a brief 2-1 lead in the third inning, but the Crusaders answered with two runs in the fourth and two more in the fifth to lead 5-3. However, the Bobcats answered back to tie the game in the bottom of the fith inning with a pair of runs.

The Crusaders would score the eventual game-winning run with two outs in the top of the seventh inning. Ali Raley reached on an infield single as Taylor Good would pinch run. After stealing second and third base, Good would score on a RBI from Ashlie Marshall to put Evangel up 6-5.

Allison Davis led Evangel going 3 for 5 with two RBIs, while Cailey Barnes joined Raley and Sheppard with two hits each. Evangel out-hit Peru State 13-8.

Bridget Rippe went six innings and scattered eight hits while striking out five for her seventh win of the season. Abby Emmitt pitched the seventh and added a strikeout to earn the save.

Game 2
After earning a save in game one, Abby Emmitt followed up game two with a complete-game four-hitter. Emmitt allowed just two runs and two walks while striking out 10 Bobcats in the win.

Evangel scored twice in the second inning and then again the fourth and fifth innings to take the lead for good. 

Ashlie Marshall led Evangel going 3 for 3 with a double, while Allison Davis was 2 for 4 with an RBI and a run scored. The Crusader bats again out-hit Peru State, 10-4.

Up Next
Evangel continues road action on Tuesday at MidAmerica Nazarene in a South Division double-header. First pitch is scheduled for 4 p.m. in Olathe, Kansas.
