BALDWIN CITY, Kan. – The Evangel baseball team rallied to finish a split with the Baker Wildcats in a pair of one-run games falling 8-7 before taking the second game 7-6 in Heart South Division action.
Game One
Game one went back and forth as Evangel jumped out to an early 1-0 lead before Baker took a 3-1 lead in the fourth inning. It continued in the fifth inning as the Crusaders responded with six runs on six hits and an error.
However, Baker answered back with five runs on seven hits in the bottom of the inning to hang on for the one-run victory.
Jordan Yates homered in the fifth inning for his third bomb of the season. Patrick Gaul continued his hot streak going 3-for-4 with an RBI and a run scored.
Dustin Eby earned the tough loss going four innings and being charged with eight runs. Tanner McVey pitched the final two innings and allowed just one hit and struck out four of the six batters he faced to hold the Wildcats.
Game Two
The series finale continued to see both teams take brief leads only for the other team to rally back.
Evangel opened the third inning with five runs on five hits and two errors as McVey singled home Gaul and Vargas to start the scoring. Gabe Franklin earned an RBI single to score Yates as Evangel left 10 runners in the game.
Baker answered with five runs in the bottom of the third and took a brief lead after scoring one in the fourth inning. However, Evangel scored twice in the sixth inning when Harrison Stevens and Gaul led off with back-to-back singles. An RBI from McVey and an RBI single from Yates finally gave the Crusaders a 7-6 lead.
McVey worked a perfect seventh striking out all three Baker hitters to earn his sixth save of the season. Ben Loge earned his second win as he allowed just two hits over three innings while adding three strikeouts.

Evangel returns home Friday and Saturday to host South Division second place MidAmerica Nazarene. First pitch of the four-game series each day is scheduled for 1 p.m.
