Evangel Baseball Opens Home Action with Sweep vs Bacone

SPRINGFIELD, Mo. – A pair of solid pitching performances for the Evangel baseball team aided in a sweep Thursday afternoon against Bacone, 10-4, and 6-2 in non-conference action.

Game One
Derek Kennell allowed just one hit in six innings as he struck out seven to earn the win. The hit came in the top of the first inning as Kennell stayed in control the rest of the game retiring 10 straight before a one-out walk in the top of the fifth.

Evangel jumped on the Warriors early with half of its runs coming in the top of the first inning. Jose Vargas doubled to drive in Patrick Gaul who led off with a single. Vargas finished 2-for-4 as both Gaul and Vargas scored two runs each.

Dustin Hargus had a day at the plate. The catcher drove in five runs going 4-for-4 in the first game with a home run to left in the fifth.

The Crusaders added four more runs in the bottom of the sixth as Jordan Yates also went 2-for-2 with a pair of RBIs in the win.

Game Two
The second game was more solid pitching and early offense for Evangel.

The Crusaders took a 2-0 lead with a run in each of the first two innings, the first coming on a Jose Vargas solo home run. Vargas was 2-for-3 with a pair of runs scored again in game two.

Ryan Frye also homered for Evangel as Dylan Bradshaw finished 2-for-3 with two runs scored for the Crusaders.

Bret Hoffman earned his second win of the season scattering four hits over six innings. Hoffman struck out eight and walked just three as he allowed only one run. Ben Loge picked up the save pitching the seventh.

Up Next
Evangel quickly returns to action Friday at home against Kansas Wesleyan. The doubleheader is scheduled for a 12 p.m. first pitch.
