MUSKOGEE, Okla. – The Evangel baseball team had a solid combined staff effort on the mound to finish a 3-1 win over Bacone College Tuesday afternoon.
The Crusaders have won five of their last seven games as they take the weekend off before a non-conference matchup at College of the Ozarks next Tuesday.
Derek Kennell tossed the first three innings and was followed by Bret Hoffman for the fourth and fifth innings as Evangel scored all three of its runs. Hoffman earned the win as he and Kennell scattered five of the six Warrior hits over the first five innings.
Evangel got on the board in the fourth when Dustin Hargus reached on an error followed by a Tanner McVey walk. After a sacrifice bunt from Ryan Frye, Hargus scored on a sacrifice fly from Dylan Bradshaw to give the Crusader the early lead.
The Crusaders added two more runs in the fifth inning as Camden Burns led off with a walk and Jordan Yates, Patrick Gaul, and Jose Vargas recorded back-to-back-to-back base hits. Burns scored on the single from Gaul who would later score on a groundout to the right side by Hargus.
Mason Baur and Tanner McVey pitched the final four innings allowing just one hit and striking out five. McVey picked up his first save of the season working the final two innings and adding three strikeouts.
Jalen Nakai earned the loss for the Warriors pitching 3.1 innings.
