Baseball Walks Off Benedictine in Tuesday Sweep

SPRINGFIELD – The Evangel baseball team rallied from a six-run deficit to finish a sweep of Benedictine 10-9 and 3-1 Tuesday afternoon in Heart of America Athletic Conference action.

The Crusaders scored five runs in the bottom of the sixth and three in the bottom of the seventh to complete the comeback. Tanner McVey singled a hard shot back up the middle to plate the winning runs for Evangel.

Benedictine built a 9-2 lead after a five-run fourth inning and scoring three runs in the top of the fifth. However, Deric Link pitched the final 2.2 innings to shut down the Ravens allowing just two hits. 

Stevin Cisneros and McVey both finished 2-for-3 in the second game as McVey, Jose Vargas and Ryan Frye all added two RBI each.

In game one, Evangel starter Dustin Eby went the distance to earn his fourth win of the season. Eby was solid as he tossed a one-hitter and struck out seven with three walks.

Offensively, the Crusaders pounded out nine hits in the win. Austin Alfrey went 2-for-3 and scored a run as the only Evangel player to record multiple hits. 

UP NEXT
Evangel continues home action Friday and Saturday against Baker. The Crusaders and Wildcats will play a double-header both days with first pitch scheduled for 1 p.m.
