Baldwin City, Kan. – After being swept by Baker on Friday, Evangel bounced back to take two from the Wildcats on Saturday with a 3-2 win in game one and a 7-3 victory in the second game in Baldwin City, Kansas.
Evangel hung on for a 3-2 win in the first game. The Crusaders added a needed insurance run in the top of the seventh inning to go ahead 3-1 on Blake McCarty's RBI single scoring Jordan Kirkpatrick. In the bottom of the seventh, Baker had the tying run at third base with nobody out but Evangel escaped with a ground out, a tag out at the plate and a caught stealing that ended the game.
Cody Holzer (2-4) got the win for Evangel working all seven innings while allowing seven hits and two earned runs with one walk and no strikeouts.
Kyle Thurman went 2 for 3 at the plate for the Crusaders with a double and an RBI.
Evangel scored all seven of their runs in the second game in the first two innings. Darin Francis hit a first inning sacrifice fly to put the Crusaders on the board, then Thurman's RBI double gave Evangel a 2-0 lead. Evangel posted five runs on five hits and took advantage of a Baker error in the second inning to take a 7-0 lead.
Austin Alfrey went 3 for 4 with two runs and an RBI for the Crusaders.
Justin Stockham (3-5) picked up the win going 5.1 innings allowing three hits and three earned runs with two walks and five strikeouts.
The Crusaders improved to 15-34 and 7-21 in the Heart of America conference. Baker dropped to 21-25 and 15-13 in the league.
Evangel ends the regular season at home next weekend in a four game series against MidAmerica Nazarene. The set starts with a doubleheader on Friday at 1 p.m. at the Evangel Baseball Complex.
