Springfield, Mo. – Evangel's softball team opened Heart of America conference play with a sweep of Peru State winning game one 8-4 and game two 8-0 in five innings at Crusader Field in Springfield on Saturday.
Evangel scored seven runs in the first two innings of game one and coasted to an 8-4 win. Sophomore
Michaela Tolliver (4-2) pitched a complete game allowing four runs on 10 hits with no walks and three strikeouts. Junior
Brittany Arnold went 2 for 4 hitting her second homer of the year while driving in three runs.
Kiara Carrier went 2 for 3 with a double and 2 runs batted in. The Crusaders had seven stolen bases.
Julie Blevins (3-1) picked up the win in game two pitching five shutout innings. The 37 year-old from Dallas, Texas threw her first complete game shutout since her junior year in 2001 allowing three hits with two strikeouts and one walk.
Brittany Arnold went 2 for 2 with two runs scored while sophomore
Cassidy Gillihan went 3 for 3 with a inside the park home run that capped a six-run third inning.
The Crusaders improved to 8-5 and 2-0 in the conference. Peru State dropped to 7-9 and 0-2 in the HAAC.
Evangel will be in action again on Tuesday, March 24th when they travel to Bartlesville, Oklahoma for a 2 p.m. doubleheader at Oklahoma Wesleyan.
