HANNIBAL, Mo. – Evangel Volleyball traveled to Hannibal, Mo., on Tuesday (Sept. 29) evening, taking part in the HLGU Tri-Match against Columbia and Hannibal-LaGrange. Evangel battled, but ultimately fell in straight sets to Columbia, but was able to rebound, sweeping Hannibal to go 1-1 on Tuesday.

Columbia came out slow to start set one, allowing Evangel to jump out to a 8-5 lead over the Cougars. A 7-5 Columbia run shifted momentum in the set, but the Valor continued to fight, re-taking the lead, 14-13, on a Jersie Spears service ace. Both teams traded the lead throughout the set and Evangel was able to take a 24-23 lead on a Charlotte Hawkins kill, needing just one point to take the win in set one. Columbia was able to overcome EU's momentum though, using blocks to take a 26-24 win over EU in set one.

Evangel and Columbia played a tight start to set two, as both teams held a 8-8 tie to open the period. The Cougars would rack off a 9-0 run to take a 17-8 lead over EU, forcing the Valor to play from behind. Evangel would battle back within three points of the lead, 19-16, but the damage had been done, as Columbia took a 25-19 win in set two.

The Valor recorded four straight points to open the third set, two of which came from Brooklyn Claxton service aces. Columbia answered with a 4-0 run of their own to tie the game at 4-4. Both teams would trade points in the set and the set defining run came from the Cougars late in the period, as EU went from trailing 17-16 to 21-16, and could not recover, falling 25-19.

Evangel swung .226 in the first set against Hannibal-LaGrange and also took advantage of 10 Trojan attacking errors in the period, taking a 25-20 win as HLGU swung .029.

Hannibal-LaGrange jumped out to a 15-11 lead in set two, but the Valor battled back, using a service ace from Brooklyn Claxton, and kills from Charlotte Hawkins and Cienna Turner to tie the game at 15-15. Both teams traded the lead until HLGU led 23-22, but Evangel closed the set on a 3-0 run, with a kill from Simone Johnson and ace from Claxton to take the set, 25-23.

Evangel's key run to sweep the Trojans in set three came after leading 16-14, using a 5-0 run highlighted by a pair of Jersie Spears service aces, leading the Valor to a 25-20 win in set three.
