Box Score

OSKALOOSA, Iowa -- Kicking off a string of four games in seven days, Evangel traveled north to take on the William Penn Statesmen. A slow fourth quarter of offense proved detrimental to the Valor, resulting in a 64-58 win for the Statesmen on Saturday.

The first quarter between Evangel and William Penn lacked offense from both teams, as the defensive pressure proved to be too much for both teams offenses. A combined 11 turnovers between the teams as well as under 30 percent shooting from the floor resulted in low scoring action. Alexis Roach scored Evangel's first points of the game at the 7:52 mark in the quarter. Through the next seven minutes, baskets from Sarah Lwambo and a pair from Jazzy Kirby ended the Valor scoring, as they took an 8-6 lead into the next quarter.

Evangel and William Penn's second quarter was a complete opposite of the first. The Valor continued to force turnovers, but were effective at scoring on the turnovers. The Valor opened the half on a 15-5 run, fueled by scores by several Valor athletes. At the 2:12 mark of the quarter, Emma Mullings hit two free throws to give the Valor their biggest lead of the afternoon, 30-16. The free throws would be the final points in the quarter for Evangel as William Penn ended the quarter on a 9-0 run, giving EU just a five point lead at the break, 30-25.

The Valor were able to keep the Statesmen at arm's length in the third quarter, maintaining a slight advantage throughout the quarter, thanks to consistent scoring from Kohnnar Patton (8 points) and Roach (6 points). Patton hit threes at crucial moments in the third quarter, including the final field goal from the floor for both teams in the third quarter as Evangel entered the final quarter with a 53-45 advantage.

Both teams began the fourth quarter struggling on offense. Neither team scored much with Evangel scoring just one point on a Micah Clayton free throw in the first 5:30 minutes. In the span of 30 seconds at the 3:55 mark, Evangel and William Penn traded baskets, making it a 58-54 game, in favor of the Valor. Evangel grew cold from the floor after the barrage of scoring and did not record another point in the quarter as the Statesmen grew hot, ending the game on a 12-0 run, leading to the Valor defeat, 58-64.

NOTABLE

  • Patton led the way with 13 points, including eight in the third quarter alone.

  • Roach and Clayton rounded out double digit scoring, recording 12 and 11 points, respectively.
