SPRINGFIELD, Mo. – After a tough loss to Benedictine last week, Evangel Men's Soccer hosted Baker, looking to turn a slow start to the conference season around. Although the Valor men fell, 1-0, Evangel fought hard and found several chances to even the score in a strong second half of play.

Baker recorded several shots to kick off the first half, but Evangel responded with two of their own from James Bourke-Nuku and Rem Harmsworth. Harmsworth broke away and had an excellent chance to grab an early lead for the Valor, but his shot went just wide of the goal. The Valor continued their offensive pace by getting a corner for Leonardo Borges and Chris Tadeo nearly headed a goal in off the corner. At the 40 minute mark, Lucas Arias came close to putting Evangel up 1-0, but the Baker keeper made an excellent save to keep it tied 0-0 at the half.

Anthony Morales had his work cut out for him in the second half. Baker pumped up their offensive pressure and recorded several strong opportunities to score. At the 54 minute mark, a Baker attacker got loose on a nice forward pass from his teammate and nailed the first goal of the game, giving the Wildcats a 1-0 lead. The Valor recorded consecutive shots on goal by Sage Ballard and Andrew Flippin, but again both were stopped by the keeper. Trying to keep it just a one score game, Morales recorded several excellent saves in goal, keeping his team in the game. The Valor continued to push on offense, but could not find a shot to score. Igor Ovcarevic had Evangel's final chance to even the game up, but again the Baker goalkeeper stuffed the shot and Evangel fell, 1-0.

HIGHLIGHTS

  • Five Valor players recorded shots on goal in the loss.

  • Morales played excellent in goal tonight, securing eight saves.
