SPRINGFIELD, Mo. – After breaking offensive records on Wednesday night, Evangel returned home to take on the Mustangs of Mount Mercy. The Valor fought hard to the finish but came up short after a cold second half, 68-60.

In the first quarter, it appeared that the offensive groove from Wednesday had carried over, as the Valor scored a game high 22 points in the period. A 7-0 run for the Valor kicked the game off and EU was able to maintain an eight point advantage throughout the quarter, thanks to consistent scoring throughout the first. By the end of the first quarter, the Valor led, 22-14.

The second quarter saw the Valor continue their consistent scoring and gritty defense. Evangel held Mount Mercy to just 11% from three and 32.1% from the floor in the first half. By forcing nine turnovers in the first half, the Valor were able to maintain their lead, and at one point extended it to 11. Makayla McVay hit a layup to finish scoring in the first half, taking an eight point lead into the break, 35-27.

The Valor's third quarter was a complete reversal of their game earlier this week. EU scored only 13 points in the third, but continued to fight the Mustangs. Mount Mercy began the quarter on a 13-4 run and took the lead, 43-39. EU answered with a 7-0 run by Logan Jones who single handedly gave the Valor a 46-43 lead. Evangel maintained their lead with an Abby Wildermuth jumper at the end of the third quarter. Jones led the Valor with 12 points at the end of the third with EU leading, 48-46.

In the final quarter, Evangel scored their lowest point total of the night, only mustering 12 points to Mount Mercy's 22. Neither team scored many points in the first part of the fourth quarter. With 5:15 remaining, the Mustangs found their offensive groove. The Mustangs went on a 7-0 run to take a 62-52 lead and force an Evangel timeout. Sophie Sparks and Kohnnar Patton both hit layups to cut the deficit to just six, but the Mustangs kept their lead to end the game, 68-60.

The Mustangs finished with five different double digit scorers. The Valor were led by Jones who finished with 12 points, and Wildermuth rounded out double digit scoring with 11. Sarah Lwambo pulled down a team high eight rebounds and Alexis Roach finished the night with four steals.
