SPRINGFIELD, Mo.  Despite a strong defensive effort, including 13 saves in goal by Zeke Brown, the Evangel men's soccer team dropped a tightly-contested 4-0 decision to No. 18 MidAmerica Nazarene Wednesday evening at Coryell Field.

After Mathieu Encourtemer's goal in the ninth minute gave MNU a 1-0 lead, the Valor gave the Pioneers all they could handle until the late stages of a heated battle that featured a combined 33 fouls and five yellow cards handed out by the officiating crew.

EU rode a strong performance in goal by Brown, who stopped 13 of the Pioneers' 17 shots on goal, as EU dropped its ninth-straight contest to start the season.

Highlights

  • Ecourtemer scored an unassisted goal at the 36:04 mark of the first half to give MNU the early edge
  • Brown made four saves in the opening half, as MNU out-shot the Valor by a 10-3 margin in the game's first 45 minutes (and 27-7 overall)
  • The Valor stayed within a goal of the Pioneers until the 55th minute, when Fernando Churin logged his first goal of the season off of a Cheuk Pan Ngan assist
  • Nicholas Redmond added a goal in the 70th minute, then assisted on Aaron Finney's goal that capped the scoring with just under two minutes to play
  • Vitor Cositorto and Vinicius Albino led EU's charge with two shots apiece, with Cositorto, Caleb Dix and Philip Mason each registering shots on goal
