OLATHE, Kan. – Evangel hit the road this weekend to face off against a hot MNU team that had won 5 straight games. The Valor would end the Pioneer winning streak, taking a back and forth game, 61-60.
The first quarter was a low scoring affair that saw both teams only score a combined 21 points. Zoey Mullings kicked off the scoring for EU as both teams began to trade baskets. With 3:46 remaining, Sarah Lwambo would score the final EU basket of the quarter, as the Valor grew cold from the floor. When the buzzer sounded, EU trailed MNU, 10-11. Bayley Harman led EU with 4 points at the end of the quarter.
By the second quarter, the Valor and Pioneers both began to heat up. Alexis Roach scored the first two Valor baskets, but were met with two baskets by MNU. Seemingly every basket EU would score would be answered by the Pioneers and would lead to both teams scoring 16 points in the quarter. Both teams shot 46% in the quarter as well. Harman led all EU scorers at halftime with 7 points and 5 boards.
The third quarter would be the quarter the Valor needed. After a continued back and forth battle, Logan Jones would score a fast break basket to extend the Valor lead to 7. MNU would go on a 5-0 run to narrow the lead, but Sadie Chisum would shoot a three from just past half court and nail it, giving the Valor a 5 point lead at the end of the quarter.
In the fourth quarter, MNU would fight for their sixth consecutive win. A 9-2 run in the first five minutes of the quarter would give the Pioneers a 49-51 lead, but the Valor would not go down without a fight. Harman would hit a 3 to trail by 1, but MNU would extend their lead back to 4 with just 1:14 remaining. Mullings would respond with a three point basket and with :07 remaining, Abby Wildermuth would score the game winning basket, giving the Valor a 61-60 victory after an MNU three fell short.
Harman led Evangel with 17 points (7-of-14 FG) and Mullings rounded out the double digit scoring with 11. Harman led the Valor with 9 rebounds. Harman and McVay would grab 2 steals to lead EU.
