SPRINGFIELD, Mo. – The Evangel men's soccer team was able to hold off Avila University Tuesday afternoon for a 2-1 victory in Heart of America Athletic Conference action.
The Crusaders jumped out to an early lead in the 11th minute when Caleb Rodriguez scored his first goal of the season. Rodriguez beat the Avila keeper in the lower corner on a pass from Kyler Moore to give Evangel a 1-0 lead.
Nearly 15 minutes later, Austin Reinold would give Evangel a 2-0 lead on his first goal of the year.
Evangel would hold the lead until a late goal in the 80th minute by Matt Hodges put Avila on the board. However, Evangel would control the ball most of the final 10 minutes to seal the 2-1 win.
Goalkeeper Josiah Dinwiddie recorded five saves for Evangel as the Crusaders out-shot Avila 6-2 in the first half. The Eagles out-shot the Crusaders 12-5 in the second half but were held to just the one goal.
