SPRINGFIELD, Mo. – An upset bid for the Evangel men's soccer team fell short Tuesday evening, falling to 17th-ranked Missouri Valley, 4-1, in Heart of America Conference action at Coryell Field.
The Vikings jumped on the board early in the 12th minute as Rafael Alcaraz scored the game's first goal.
Evangel would answer near the end of the first half when Caleb Rodriguez pushed a goal in from the middle of the box on an impressive sequence and assist from Travis Joy. Both teams would enter halftime with a 1-1 tie.
The second half saw the Crusaders hold steady as the Vikings attempted 17 shots in the period. Missouri Valley broke the tie in the 70th minute when Miguel Fernandez scored on a scrum from 15 yards out on an assist from Vinicius Magalhaes.
Missouri Valley would add two more goals within a minute to extend its lead to 4-1 as Fernandez added his second goal in the 89th minute.
