CONWAY, Ark. – A late comeback fell short Saturday in the season opener for the Evangel University men's soccer team falling 5-3 at Central Baptist in non-conference action.
Central Baptist jumped out in front with three goals in the first half. However, the Crusaders fought back with goals in the 48th minute from Nick Wagner and the 50th minute from Caleb Rodriguez.
Ultimately it would be the Mustangs finishing the match as Ferdinand Matebu scored his second goal of the night in the 64 minute to put the game out of reach. Evangel would manage its third goal of the night in the 82nd minute from Austin Reinold, but could not complete the comeback.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
- An even match saw Evangel edge CBC with one extra shot in the match 13-12 although CBC finished with 10 shots on goal and the Crusaders finished with nine.
- The three goals in the match were the most scored by the Crusaders since reinstating the program last fall.
- Ryan Harrisskitt added five saves in goal for the Crusaders.
- Austin Reinold and Thomas Burkhardt had multiple shots on goal for Evangel.
