Early Goals Prove Difference in EU Women's Soccer 2-1 Loss to SWC

SPRINGFIELD, Mo. – Valor Women's Soccer returned home on Monday (Sept. 7) morning, hosting the Southwestern Christian Eagles for a non-conference matchup on Labor Day. Looking to rebound after a pair of losses, the Valor fell behind early and would pressure the Eagles late, but could not rally, falling 2-1 at home to close non-conference play.

Southwestern came out early and caught Evangel off guard, as the Eagles passed a ball in the box that the Valor defenders could not swat away, finding a SWC attacker who netted the first score of the game at the 1:13 mark of the game. 16 minutes later and with no Evangel shots on the board, Southwestern was able to poke a ball loose from underneath the Valor goalkeeper and score to extend their lead to 2-0. Eliza Barger and McKenzie Calhoun would both register shots in the first half that were saved by the Eagles goalkeeper, as the Valor trailed 2-0 at the halftime break.

Samantha Shane entered at goalkeeper for the second half of play and had an exceptional outing for her first collegiate performance, holding the Eagles scoreless in the second half. Dekeria Carter would put a shot on goal for the Valor early in the second half, but again the SWC keeper would deny the attempt. At the 74:42 mark of the game, Makayla Myers made a pair of strong one-on-one moves and nailed a shot in the upper right hand corner of the goal to draw the Valor within a goal of the lead, 2-1. Evangel battled over the final 15 minutes of play and Myers would have one final opportunity late in the period, but the visiting keeper recorded the save, forcing EU to fall, 2-1.

  • Samantha Shane recorded six saves in goal in her first collegiate minutes.

  • Eliza Barger and Myers led the Valor with two shots on Monday.

QUOTABLE

"For the second match in a row, we showed real heart and showed our true character in battling back in both matches. Now we just need to string some scoreless halves together defensively," Women's Soccer Head Coach Bruce Deaton stated. "We have just concluded one of the more challenging non-conference schedules that we have ever had, so I believe that these matches have absolutely prepared us for our upcoming conference schedule. Our focus today was belief, hard work, and commitment, and I am satisfied we did that today. We do have some technical fixes we still need to make and we will invest there over the next week before conference play begins on Wednesday."

Valor Women's Soccer will take a week off before taking on the #14 Oklahoma Wesleyan Eagles at 5:00 p.m., in Springfield, Mo., on Wednesday (Sept. 16) evening.
