Evangel Women's Soccer Drops KCAC Opener to #15 OKWU

The Basics

Score: Evangel 0, #15 Oklahoma Wesleyan 6 | Box Score

Record: Evangel (1-5-0, 0-1-0), Oklahoma Wesleyan (2-2-2, 1-0-0)

Location: Springfield, Mo. (Coryell Field)

SPRINGFIELD, Mo. – Valor Women's Soccer opened KCAC play on Wednesday (Sept. 16) evening, hosting the 15th ranked Oklahoma Wesleyan Eagles. Knowing they were playing the defending KCAC champions, the Valor needed their best play of the season to keep pace with the Eagles offense. Unfortunately, early scores from the Eagles hurt Evangel's chances, falling 6-0 on Wednesday.

Oklahoma Wesleyan came out with a flurry of attacks, scoring the first goal of the match at the 4:59 mark, taking a 1-0 lead. 14 minutes and six shots by the Eagles later, OKWU extended their advantage to 2-0. At the 28:08 mark, Eliza Barger would record Evangel's first shot on goal in the contest, a header that found the OKWU keeper. After holding the Eagles scoreless for 21 minutes, OKWU added to their lead, and were able to score a pair of goals in quick succession before the halftime break, as EU trailed, 5-0.

OKWU would score their final goal of the evening nine minutes into the second half, taking a 6-0 advantage. Evangel's defense sharpened up from this point on, not allowing another goal. McKenzie Calhoun and Rylie Kidman would both record shot attempts in the second half, but none found the back of the goal, resulting in a 6-0 loss to #15 Oklahoma Wesleyan.

HIGHLIGHTS

  • Evangel recorded five shots in the loss.

  • Samantha Shane recorded 12 saves in goal in her first full collegiate contest.

QUOTABLE

"The top team in this conference and one of the top teams in the country proved to be too much for us this evening. There were a number of positive moments during the evening. The adjustment at halftime proved to be good for us and allowed us to work another formation with some levels of success," Women's Soccer Head Coach Bruce Deaton stated. "Even though this very demanding part of our schedule has impacted our record, it has allowed us to also put this stretch behind us and more strongly compete to achieve our conference goals going forward."

UP NEXT

Valor Women's Soccer will hit the road on Saturday (Sept. 19) morning, taking on the McPherson College Bulldogs in McPherson, Kan., at 11:00 a.m.
