KANSAS CITY, Mo. – Valor Women's Soccer continued their road trip on Wednesday (Sept. 23) afternoon, traveling to Kansas City to take on the Avila Eagles in a KCAC matchup. Despite trailing at the halftime break, the Valor were able to battle back to take a draw with the Eagles, 2-2.

Avila dominated the first 15 minutes of play offensively, out-shooting Evangel and earning a pair of corners, but the Valor matched with equal defense, holding the Eagles scoreless. Makayla Myers and the EU offense began to record shots in the first half and on a free kick, Emma Budimlya buried her second goal of the season, giving EU a 1-0 lead at the 22:17 mark. The Valor continued to fight, but Avila tied the game up at the 32:15 mark and then took the lead, 2-1, just before halftime, scoring a goal with a minute and 34 seconds remaining before halftime.

The Valor came out with strong offensive pressure in the second half, recording several shots on goal. At the 62:29 mark, Evangel earned a corner that they used perfectly, as Budimlya used a pass that found McKenzie Calhoun who buried a header to tie the game up at 2-2. Myers would have Evangel's final chance at scoring a goal in the period, but the Avila keeper would earn the save, as EU's defense shut down Avila to close the game, resulting in a 2-2 draw.

HIGHLIGHTS

  • Emma Budimlya and McKenzie Calhoun both recorded their second goals of the season in the draw.

  • Budimlya earned her first assist of the season on Calhoun's goal.

  • Samantha Shane recorded four saves in goal on Wednesday, while Paige Estes held the Eagles scoreless in the second half with three saves.

QUOTABLE

"What an incredible match! At halftime, we asked the ladies to press more defensively and win the 50/50s in the second half and they responded in a huge way," Women's Soccer Head Coach Bruce Deaton stated. "We created a lot of opportunities and we showed true character to get the equalizing goal and nearly grabbed another! Emma Budimlya scored a brilliant free kick goal in the first half and served an amazing ball on the corner for McKenzie Calhoun to head into the goal. Another big point earned today and I'm so very proud of them. Each match I see us continuing to get better!!"

UP NEXT
