Exceptional Defensive Effort Leads to Evangel MSOC Win over McPherson

MCPHERSON, Kan. – Evangel Men's Soccer hit the road on Sunday (Sept. 20) morning, taking on the McPherson College Bulldogs for their first road KCAC matchup of the season. Despite neither team scoring in the first half, it would be Evangel that scored the game winner halfway through the second half, taking a 1-0 win over the Bulldogs.

McPherson would control possession for much of the first half of play, putting several shots on goal that the Valor defense would deny. Tales Ruiz and Caleb Burton both recorded shots in the first 15 minutes of play, but both shots went wide of the goal to keep the game scoreless. Hayes Van Breusegen put Evangel's lone shot on goal in the first half, but the Bulldogs keeper was able to earn a save, as both teams took a scoreless tie into the halftime break.

Evangel controlled the offensive pace to open the second half, as a foul on McPherson granted a corner kick to Vasco Goncalves. Goncalves' kick would find Akari Sydney, who directed the ball to an open Alim Bangura, who nailed a shot in the bottom right corner of the goal, giving EU a 1-0 lead. Evangel demonstrated exceptional defensive effort over the final 34 minutes of play, keeping McPherson scoreless and taking a 1-0 win in full time, as Valentin Goity tied the school record for saves in a game, finishing with 15 in goal on Sunday.

HIGHLIGHTS

  • Valentin Goity recorded an impressive 15 saves in goal on Sunday, holding the Bulldogs scoreless in his clean sheet effort, tying the school record.

  • Alim Bangura scored his first goal of the season on Sunday.
