COLUMBIA, Mo. – Valor Women's Soccer concluded their road trip on Wednesday (Sept. 2) night, taking on the Stephens Stars in Columbia. The Stars would score a pair in the first half and despite Evangel adding a goal in the second half, the Valor would come up short, 2-1.
Evangel put pressure on Stephens to open the game, putting three shots on goal as McKenzie Calhoun, Lili Thiessen, and Makayla Myers all recorded shots. At the 20:51 mark, Stephens scored their first goal of the game, taking a 1-0 lead over the Valor. Rylie Kidman would add another shot on goal for the Valor, but on a Stars corner, Stephens doubled their lead, going ahead 2-0 and leading at the halftime break.
Stephens would open the second half with several shots, but Madison Villaronga and the Valor defense would not allow another score from the home team. Ellen Garber would score Evangel's lone goal at the 70:56 mark of the game and continue to ramp up pressure on the Stars defense, as Emma Budimlya and Myers both recorded shots that did not find the back of the net, resulting in Evangel's 2-1 loss on Wednesday.
HIGHLIGHTS
QUOTABLE
"We've made another huge jump in our play this evening. Honestly, even in a 2-1 loss, I can say I saw us play at one of the best levels thus far this season. We showed character and resilience in that second half with our intensity - we really clamped down on their attack and created a lot of quality of attack for ourselves," Women's Soccer Head Coach Bruce Deaton stated. "The ladies indeed left it all on the field. Ellen Garber's first collegiate goal was brilliant and truly reflective of how we want to play!! I'm very proud of what these ladies did this evening and moments like these are exactly why I believe so strongly in how good this team continues to become and will become with conference play starting!"Â
