POINT LOOKOUT, Mo. – Evangel Volleyball resumed their extended road trip, traveling just south to take on their longtime rival, College of the Ozarks, aiming to take a win over the Bobcats in their first meeting of the season. Tuesday night's matchup proved to be a tale of each set, as the Valor ultimately came out on top, 3-2.
Evangel and C of O battled in the first set, as neither team was able to put much distance between each other on the scoreboard. Trailing by just one point, 17-16, Evangel was unable to stop a Bobcats run that proved to be the difference in the set, as the Valor fought to attempt a comeback, but fell 25-23 in set one.
The Valor dominated the start of the second set, jumping out to as much as an 18-8 lead over the Bobcats. C of O would fight back to close the set, using a 13-5 run to make it a 23-21 game. Simone Johnson would record a kill and the Valor took advantage of a Bobcat attacking error to survive with a 25-21 win in set two.
Set three played similar to set one, as the Valor and Bobcats battled until C of O generated a late run, 7-0, to lead Evangel 22-16. Cienna Turner and Johnson would record kills to attempt to force a comeback in the period, but the Bobcats closed out the set with the final two points, forcing EU to need to win the final two sets to take a comeback win, 25-20.
Evangel once again dominated, this time in the fourth set, taking advantage of several C of O miscues and using several kills from Charlotte Hawkins to take a 25-12 win over the Bobcats, tying the game up at 2-2.
After forcing the Bobcats to hit -.107 in the fourth set, the Valor forced C of O to swing -.176 in the fifth set, helping to earn the win in the final set of play. Both teams would remain tied early until the Valor traded pairs of points for just one Bobcat point. Johnson recorded three kills in the set to help Evangel solidify the win, 15-8, earning the come from behind victory over their rival.
