Winning Earns First Career NAIA Win as EU MSOC Defeats Mission, 3-0

SPRINGFIELD, Mo. – Evangel Men's Soccer returned to action on Monday (Aug. 24) afternoon, hosting the Mission University Patriots. After earning a draw on Friday night, the Valor came out with energy and played a much stronger all-around game, taking a 3-0 win over MU, giving head coach Samuel Winning the first win of his NAIA head coaching career.

Evangel and Mission battled early in the first half, as both teams were able to put shots on goal. Miguel Santos had a strong chance at the 15:50 mark, but could not convert. Just six minutes later, Caleb Burton scored his second goal of the season, knocking the ball in the left side of the goal on a pass from Hayes Van Breusegen to give the Valor a 1-0 lead. The Valor dominated the remainder of the half with possession and shots, but could not add another score in the first half, leading 1-0 at halftime.

The Valor pace was too much for Mission in the second half as Burton put a shot on goal that was blocked, but found the feet of Shomari Rimbo, who doubled Evangel's lead, 2-0. Valentin Goity would be challenged in the second half, defending against a penalty kick, but would use a strong save to his left to stop Mission's strongest scoring opportunity. At the 74:42 mark, Evangel added their final score of the game when Miguel Santos netted a score, solidifying Evangel's 3-0 win on Monday.

"It was great to recover from our last game with a much improved performance and three points," said Head Coach Samuel Winning. "We are starting to put our work in training onto the field for match days."

Evangel Men's Soccer remains at home next Tuesday (Sept. 1) evening at 6:00 p.m., to host NCAA D-II Southwest Baptist.
