SPRINGFIELD, Mo. – Evangel Baseball opened their final KCAC series of the regular season on Thursday (Apr. 23) afternoon, hosting the Friends Falcons, needing at least one win to earn a berth into the KCAC Conference Tournament.

The Valor would rally on multiple occasions in game one, as Mason Reilly played hero, hitting a go-ahead single and earning the save as the Valor defeated Friends, 8-7, in game one. In game two, Evangel once again put their rally caps on, using a huge third inning that consisted of Quentin Edwards breaking the single season hits record, taking a ?-? Win and sweep of the Falcons on Thursday.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Friends scored the first run of the afternoon in game one, but the Valor quickly tied the game up in the bottom of the second, as Justus Cherrico singled and scored on a Cade Beshore single.

  • The Falcons scored a pair in the third, a run in the fourth, and a run in the fifth to take a 5-1 lead over the Valor.

  • Evan Jno-Baptiste walked, Mason Reilly singled, and Nate Nunes reached on a fielders choice, as Quentin Edwards muscled a ball past the left field wall, using a grand slam to tie the game up at 5-5.

  • In the bottom of the sixth, Evangel took their first lead of the afternoon, as TJ Newman scored on a Baptiste single, making it a 6-5 game. Newman had entered the game as a courtesy runner for the catcher after Gannon Miller singled.

  • The Falcons quickly responded with a pair of runs in the top of the seventh to re-take a 7-6 lead.

  • In the bottom of the eighth, the Valor would again rally. Miller singled, followed by a Beshore walk. Newman and Cayden Moody entered to run for both baserunners, using a double steal to move into scoring position. After Justice Loflin worked a pinch hit walk, Reilly entered in a two out situation with the bases loaded. Mason would reach out for a ball on a 0-2 pitch and hit a bloop single into left field, scoring both pinch runners and giving EU a 8-7 lead.

  • Reilly entered to close game one, striking out the first pair of batters and using help from Drew Dobberstein, who robbed a potential home run with a snow cone type catch in left field, giving the Valor the 8-7 win and their berth into the upcoming KCAC Conference Tournament.

  • Friends took an early 5-0 lead after the top of the second inning of game two against Evangel.

  • Cherrico and Beshore both singled in the bottom of the second, both scoring on a single from Nunes and a double from D. Dobberstein.

  • The Falcons responded by scoring a pair in the top of the third, taking a 7-3 lead over the Valor.

  • Evangel's offense exploded in the bottom of the third, scoring eight runs to take an 11-7 advantage. Reilly doubled to open the inning, followed by four straight singles from Kannon Perry, Edwards, Cherrico, and H. Perry to score Reilly, Newman, and Edwards. Nunes, D. Dobberstein, and Reilly all singled again, scoring Nunes and Cherrico, before a double from K. Perry scored Reilly and Dobberstein to close scoring in the inning.

  • The Valor added another pair in the bottom of the fourth, as H. Perry was hit by a pitch, Beshore walked, and Nunes doubled, scoring both runners to take a 13-7 lead.

  • Evangel was not finished offensively, adding a trio of runs in the bottom of the fifth inning. Reilly was walked and K. Perry was hit by a pitch, with Reilly scoring on a Cherrico single and Newman scoring on a sacrifice fly from H. Perry. A Beshore single scored Edwards to cap off scoring for EU, leading 16-7.

  • After Friends scored a run in the top of the sixth, Reilly continued his big day, hitting a solo home run to left field to match the Falcons run.

  • Owen Dobberstein and Brayden Epperhart closed out the game two win, 17-9.

NOTABLE

  • Mason Reilly earned his fourth save of the season in game one, as Riley Fuller moved to 3-4 on the year, earning the win in relief.

  • Owen Dobberstein earned his third win of the season on the mound in game two.

  • Quentin Edwards hit his 16th blast of the season in game one, a grand slam that allowed Evangel to tie the game up after trailing 5-1, while also breaking the Evangel single season hits record with his 71st in game two.

  • Reilly had a huge day at the plate, going 6-9 with five runs and four RBIs.

  • With the win, Evangel solidifies a spot in the KCAC Conference Tournament next week.
