SPRINGFIELD, Mo. – Evangel Baseball hosted the Oklahoma Wesleyan Eagles on Tuesday (Apr. 21) afternoon for the rubber match of their series.

Evangel would take an early 5-0 lead against OKWU, but were unable to maintain their advantage, falling 12-10 after a late comeback attempt.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Evangel got on the board early on Tuesday, as Nate Nunes was hit by a pitch and Quentin Edwards reached on a fielder's choice, both scoring on a Justus Cherrico double.

  • The Valor added a trio of runs in the second inning, as Kannon Perry walked and TJ Newman entered to run for the catcher. Newman would be active on the bases, stealing both second and third, scoring on a Evan Jno-Baptiste double. After Drew Dobberstein worked a walk, Nunes doubled to score the freshman, and a Cade Beshore sacrifice fly scored Baptiste, giving EU a 5-0 lead.

  • OKWU scored a pair in the top of the third, but Evangel earned a run back in the bottom of the same inning, as Mason Reilly singled and scored on a K. Perry double, 6-2.

  • OKWU tied the game up in the top of the fifth inning and held the Valor scoreless until the bottom of the ninth, as the Eagles led, 12-6.

  • Evangel attempted a rally in the bottom of the ninth, as Dobberstein and Beshore both worked walks, followed by Edwards being hit by a pitch with two outs. Cherrico hit a single to shallow right field, scoring Dobberstein and Beshore, before Heath Perry worked a walk. Reilly singled to left center field to score both Cherrico and Edwards, before K. Perry worked another walk. With the bases loaded once again, the Valor were unable to cap off what would have been an improbable comeback attempt, falling 12-10 on Tuesday.
