SPRINGFIELD, Mo. – Evangel Baseball concluded a three day homestand on Monday (Mar. 9) afternoon, hosting (RV) Oklahoma Wesleyan after playing four games in three days.
Despite Oklahoma Wesleyan scoring in nearly every single inning, Evangel rallied late, putting a four spot up in the bottom of the eighth inning to take a 14-12 upset win on Monday.
HOW IT HAPPENED
-
OKWU took an early 1-0 lead at the end of the top of the first, but Evangel responded with a pair of runs in the bottom of the first, as Cole Leonhart reached on a fielders choice and scored on a two-run blast from Quentin Edwards.
-
The Eagles tied the game up at 2-2 in the top of the second inning.
-
Oklahoma Wesleyan would not score in the third inning, their lone inning of the afternoon being held scoreless, but Evangel would score four in the bottom of the third to take a 6-2 lead. Nate Nunes worked a walk, followed by a single from Edwards, double from Justus Cherrico, and a Kannon Perry home run to solidify the lead.
-
OKWU responded by scoring five runs in the top of the fourth, taking a 7-6 lead over EU.
-
In the bottom of the fourth, Baptiste and Nunes both worked walks, both scoring on an Edwards double to center field, taking a 8-7 lead.
-
The Eagles tied the game back up at 8-8 in the top of the fifth, but again, the Valor offense had an answer, adding two to their total. Heath Perry worked a walk, followed by K. Perry being hit by a pitch. A ground out scored Heath, while Kannon stole home on a perfectly executed delayed steal from Baptiste, forcing the catcher to throw without anyone holding first, making it a 10-8 EU lead.
-
Another run came across to score for OKWU in the sixth, cutting into Evangel's lead, 10-9.
-
A home run from the Eagles in the top of the seventh tied the game up at 10-10.
-
In the top of the eighth, it appeared Evangel's offense was done for the day, after going two straight innings without a run. The Eagles hit a solo home run to take a 11-10 lead over EU, heading into the bottom of the eighth.
-
Evangel responded in the inning, working deep counts after an early pair of outs. H. Perry worked a walk and TJ Newman came in to run. Newman took advantage of a pair of passed balls, advancing all the way to third, and scoring on a K. Perry double down the right field line to tie the game up. Another passed ball and wild pitch allowed Braiden Whitaker to score (who was running for Kannon), after Mason Reilly worked a walk. Justice Loflin worked a walk and Drew Dobberstein re-entered to run. After Baptiste earned a walk, Nunes was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded, scoring Reilly. A balk allowed Dobberstein to score, closing out the scoring for EU, leading OKWU 14-11.
-
OKWU put pressure on Evangel in the top of the ninth and scored a run to trail 14-12. With the game winning run at the plate, Isaac Daley closed the door on OKWU, using a pair of strikeouts to solidify Evangel's upset 14-12 win.
NOTABLE
-
Brock Wycoff earned the win on Monday, throwing 1.2 innings and striking out three batters, while Isaac Daley closed the door, striking out the final two batters of Monday's contest to earn the save.
-
Quentin Edwards went 3-5 at the plate, driving in four RBIs and scoring a pair of runs.
