BRANSON, Mo. – Valor Softball concluded the Grand Slam Classic on Saturday (Mar. 7) afternoon in Branson, taking on Graceland and Cottey.
Early runs pushed Evangel to a 10-3 win in their matchup with Graceland on Saturday, while the Valor had to rally against Cottey, after trailing early, taking a 9-5 win over the Comets to go 4-0 at the classic.
NOTABLE

Maddy Meierer earned the win against Cottey, striking out four batters and earning her ninth win of the season.

Bodie Smith earned her second win of the season against Graceland, striking out five batters in five innings.

Kenna Mayfield had a big game against Cottey, going 4-4 with four runs scored and a pair of RBIs.
HOW IT HAPPENED

Evangel jumped on Graceland early, as Naomi Perkins was hit by a pitch, followed by singles from Camryn Casey and Audrey Carlton to score Perkins. A Karli Facklam groundout scored Casey, before Lauren Dill was hit by a pitch, scoring alongside Carlton on a Holly Hanks double.

In the bottom of the second, Danielle Cutbirth singled, scoring on a Perkins triple, before Casey singled to score Perkins. Carlton doubled to score Casey, before Hanks again scored a pair of runners on a single, making it a 9-0 ballgame.

Graceland added a trio of runs over the following third and fourth innings, before EU closed the game with Casey scoring after reaching via error, 10-3.

The Valor took an early 2-0 lead over Cottey in the bottom of the first, as Kenna Mayfield singled, scoring on a Perkins single. A delayed double steal allowed Perkins to score, making it a 2-0 game.

Cottey ambushed Evangel in the top of the second, scoring five runs to take a 5-2 lead.

Evangel quickly responded by tying the game up in the bottom of the second, using a Chloe Krans single, followed by a walk from Cutbirth, single from Mayfield to load the bases, double from Perkins to score Krans and Cutbirth, and a Casey single to score Mayfield, 5-5.

The Valor took the lead in the bottom of the fourth inning, as Mayfield hit a home run to right field to make it a 6-5 game. Perkins singled and scored on a sacrifice fly from Carlton to add to Evangel's lead, 7-5.

Evangel added a pair of runs in the bottom of the fifth, as Cutbirth reached on an error, scoring on a Mayfield single. Mayfield scored on a Casey double, making it a 9-5 game.

Meierer shut down the Comet bats late, leading to a 9-5 win over Cottey for EU.
