SPRINGFIELD, Mo. – Valor Softball competed in their home opener on Wednesday (Mar. 18) afternoon, taking on the York Panthers in a KCAC doubleheader.

Evangel dominated both games, resulting in similar finishes in a sweep of the Panthers, 8-0 in both contests in just six innings of play.

NOTABLE

• Maddy Meierer earned the win against York, striking out seven batters and earning her 12th win of the season.

• Madi Bentley built off her last outing, pitching another shutout and striking out five batters in her seventh win of the year.

HOW IT HAPPENED

• Kenna Mayfield hit a bunt single to third to open Wednesday's contest for EU, scoring on a Camryn Casey triple that burned the center fielder. A Natalie Morgan double in the left center gap scored Casey, giving EU a 2-0 lead.

• A fielding error allowed Karli Facklam to get on base in the bottom of the second, as the junior came across to score on a Danielle Cutbirth groundout.

• Casey opened the bottom of the third with a double down the left field line, while Morgan worked a walk and Lauren Dill bunted for a single to load the bases. Audrey Carlton hit a sacrifice fly to score Casey, while a ground out from Facklam scored Morgan, giving the Valor a 5-0 lead.

• In the bottom of the fourth, Chloe Krans worked a walk, stole second base, and scored on a Naomi Perkins single to second base, making it a 6-0 advantage.

• Evangel added a pair of runs in the bottom of the sixth to take a run-rule win in the bottom of the sixth, as Cutbirth tripled to right center, followed by a Mayfield triple through the right side of the infield, and a Perkins single to make it a 8-0 win for EU.

• Mayfield opened game two up with another bunt single to third, stealing second and scoring on a steal of home, after Casey, who was hit by a pitch, stole second to force a throw from the catcher.

• In the bottom of the second, Facklam doubled and scored on a Cutbirth sacrifice fly to make it a 2-0 ballgame.

• In the bottom of the third, Morgan worked a walk, with Karla Ochoa entering to run for the catcher. Ochoa scored on a stolen base and Dill single to make it a 3-0 ballgame.

• Evangel added a pair of runs in the bottom of the fourth, as Cutbirth doubled, scoring on a Perkins single, while again, Casey stole second, allowing Perkins to score on a steal of home as she forced a throw from the catcher.

• In the bottom of the sixth, Perkins was hit by a pitch, followed by a Casey and Morgan walk to load the bases. Hayleigh Shubert worked a walk to score Perkins and a Carlton single to right center field scored Morgan and Casey, leading to the 8-0 run rule win and sweep of York on Wednesday.
